Motivational Mondays

We had a computer when I was very young. Of course its use was limited to playing ‘Minesweeper’ and ‘Paint’ and other such programmes. And all day long I can remember the musical noise that would fill the house by the clicking of keys and whirring and buzzing of this machine.  At any time of the day you would find me, either with this contraption or with my grandfather’s typewriter that had me equally fascinated. Somehow I always knew I had something to say. I would write as though I was talking to someone and I did not pay any heed to whoever was listening on the other side.

Now every time I played with precious ink by typing on the typewriter, I’d get a yelling for wasting my time and I remember them saying ‘Your words are nonsensical,’ and then they would laugh about what I had written (which was pretty much about my day at school).

Firstly, it is not unusual to confuse your fascination for something with passion and talent for something else. This coming from someone who initially thought she wanted to be a computer engineer (whatever that meant). That is exactly why it probably takes you half a life time to figure out what you want from life. So don’t be disheartened if your career does not take off immediately.

Even now, I hear words of defamation such as ‘You’re too young to have an opinion.’ It is in moments like these when I question my career goals that I turn to Whoopi Goldberg. In part two of the amusing comedy ‘Sister Act,’ Whoopi or Sr. Mary Clarence quotes one of the best quotes I've ever heard by Rainer Maria Rilke. She says, ‘If, when you wake up in the morning, you can think of nothing but writing . . . then you are a writer.’ And I've always thought that those are words to live by, be it any profession.
