Ladder of Success
When you're trying to make it down the road as an adult, more often than never you find yourself stopping to take a break. Faced with new challenges every day you seem to think of your past problems as unworthy of all the time you spent on them. You now begin to remember them with such fond appreciation. You may even long to go back in time even though it seemed tough then. Because when you are in the middle of that dark forest of problems, there is no getting out. You can rarely see a way and there's inevitably a hundred voices singing in unison about the things you are doing or were doing wrong. But when you pass that stage and a new problem comes along, your past does not seem so bad.
“Try to stay positive,” maybe the four words that you don't want to hear from anyone. There is a limit to how much helpful advice one can take. "You will learn from this situation," "Trust me on this," "Be positive." Positivity never helped you before. Time did.
"Give it time," a gentle breeze says and you believe it instantly.
When you finally figure out what you want out of life it feels like you have conquered the world. Only to look up and see a steep, uncertain and unsteady ladder ahead of you. You made it to the ladder of success and the path that led you to it was not easy at all, but it was worth it. (Was it?..)
The road less taken was chosen even though innumerable voices said that you weren’t good enough.
The ladder of success looks different from those in your dreams. The ladder—never ending, dimly lit, covered in uncertainty—is not gold plated. It is not cushioned with the calmness of mother’s love nor is it built in the firmness and encouragement from friends. There is self-doubt on every rung with plenty of room to turn back and quit.
Then suddenly you wonder about all the back breaking times that lie ahead. How many more times would you have to prove your hard work and passion? “You've got to really want it,” they say, clueless as to how much you've tried. So you keep your head down and keep carrying on, hoping some day you will be relieved of this constant state of panic in your gut that says otherwise...
