Gods of Destiny

When we look back at our lives and glance over the trail of bread crumbs leading us back to the start, the first thought in some of our heads is, ‘Do I regret any of it?’

Regret is surely one of the bogeymen in the grown up world. Nobody sincerely regrets their mistakes because we are all so afraid of the sheer intensity of what that might do to our lives. If you really think about it, you will hear yourself comforting the child within with the words, ‘It all happens for a reason.’ Blaming it on destiny is a convenient theory, and just one side of this rusted coin, some (like me) would say. The other side believes in God. Not surprisingly, a recent survey conducted shows that almost half of the world's population believes in the existence of a God like entity and the other half are strong advocates for destiny.

In times of great sorrow my mother would always console me by saying, ‘This too shall pass.’ It has been a somewhat catchy phrase in our family. And after you've survived the storm (or whatever it is that had to ‘pass’) they would say ‘Everything happens for the best.’

The blame game is being played between two very powerful, and not to mention angry, entities who insist that people should try not to deviate from the glorious path. And so people strive hard to follow what’s written in the stars, while the others, like my mother, believe in God’s great plan.

In the midst of the play-offs between fortune tellers and overcrowded places of worship, a much deeper truth arises. Are we all just so terrified of admitting to making our mistakes that we believe in fate or are we all secretly optimistic about our past?

  4. This was a beautiful and thought provoking piece. I look forward to reading more of your work!

Also, I would like to say that it is very easy to tell someone that 'they have their head up their ass' but it takes courage to say exactly what you're thinking and stay true to your opinion!
